The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Erwin Watkins and Simeon Whiteley worked for the Office of Indian Affairs in the 1870's and 1860's, respectively. Following military service as an officer in the Civil War, Watkins was appointed an Indian Inspector in 1875.
